Training Teachers
in Tea Gardens

—walking alongside the local church in Siliguri, India—

SUMMARY

The Training Teachers in Tea Gardens project walks alongside the Church of God in Siliguri, West Bengal, India to establish free tuition learning centers among highly impoverished tea communities. Funds from this project provide teacher training, classroom materials, and school supplies to launch the first three years of the learning centers. We believe the education offered through these centers breaks cycles of poverty and illiteracy in ways that set children free to dream today and flourish in the days to come.

BACKGROUND

Many children in North Bengal’s tea plantations live in extreme poverty. Families often survive on less than $3 per day and may only earn any income six months of the year. Most workers are illiterate, lack land rights, and live in cramped quarters. Providing food is a daily struggle, and thus a child’s education is a distant dream for many people.

Vision

The Church of God in Siliguri, India envisions a safe, supportive environment where children can learn, grow, and dream beyond the limitations of tea plantation labor. The long-term goal of this project is for these students to complete at least 10th and 12th grade, equipping them to pursue opportunities that break generational cycles of poverty and bondage.

STRATEGY

The goal of this project is to train and equip two young believers—one male and one female—from the community to lead free tuition centers. These centers will teach academic subjects, instill moral values, and nurture Godly character, creating a foundation for transformation in both education and spiritual life.
