HOUSE OF HOPE BANGLADESH

WALKING ALONGSIDE THE LOCAL CHURCH GLOBALLY

Summary

The Church of God in Lalmonirhat, Bangladesh, is committed to walking alongside women and children as they seek hope and healing from sex trafficking and exploitation. House of Hope Bangladesh thus began in the heart of Daulatdia, one of the largest brothels in the world. This ministry among women and children shares the light and love of Christ by providing a safe place of refuge, nutritious meals, school supplies, medical assistance, entrepreneurial training, and other vital ministries for some of the most vulnerable people in our world today.

Cost

This monthly amount helps cover the cost of the following initiatives at House of Hope:

$1,562: School uniforms and supplies
$470: Emergency medical assistance

Project # 42.30031

BACKGROUND

Daulatdia, a village in Bangladesh, is the largest brothel in the nation, and is recognized as one of the largest brothels in the world. With over 1,500 registered sex workers, the brothel serves more than 3,000 male customers each day—many of whom come to buy sex, take drugs, and gamble money. While prostitution in Bangladesh is only legal for women over the age of 18, the average age of sex workers in Daulatdia is 14, with many girls beginning to work around age 10.

Human Trafficking in Bangladesh

Each year at least 50,000 Bangladeshi women and children are sold into the sex industry and slavery. Over the past 30 years more than 1 million women and children have been exploited by human trafficking. Part of what precipitates trafficking in Bangladesh is low wages for work. Women are paid an average of $2 a day and men make between $3-$4 a day for working 10 hours. When pimps offer an average of $250 for a young girl or woman, impoverished families are forced to make excruciating decisions.

The video above explains some of the background for project partnerships in Bangladesh. While the focus of this project has shifted since the original production of this video in 2016, much of the cultural context continues to influence ministries throughout the nation today.
