AFRICA CONGREGATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

—walking alongside the local church—

Summary

This project walks alongside congregations in Africa as they adapt to evolving government requirements for churches. While the governments of the DRC, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe emphasize that church standards are designed to protect civilians from exploitation and abuse, the associated costs and requirements can present significant challenges for many churches and believers across Africa. Nonetheless, this project remains committed to supporting these vibrant faith communities as they both meet the demands of today and make a way for flourishing in the generations to come.

Cost

This project is being funded in incremental stages. Currently, the most urgent funding requirements include:
• DRC: $13,550 to construct a wall around the property.
• Rwanda: $5,750 is desperately needed for 4 churches to remain in operation. $28,750 is needed to construct a wall around the national church headquarters property.
• Zimbabwe: $89,412 to build the nation’s first Church of God building and national headquarters.

Project # 42.30322

BACKGROUND

The list of government requirements for churches in the DRC, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe include:

• Extensive Infrastructure Development (including adequate parking, soundproofing systems, high quality sanitation facilities, and fire hazard equipment)
• National Headquarters Established
• Proof of Theology Training for Clergy
• Legal Registration Acquired
• Government Inspections and Certifications Received

While the need for emergency funding to meet these ever-impending government requirements is a felt need across all three countries, there are specific needs and opportunities unique to each context. Here is a snapshot of each:

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

The Church of God in the DRC has endured great humanitarian and political strife, and yet their faith remains steadfast. Over the past several years, thousands of Church of God people have been displaced from their homes by rebel armies and flooding disasters. Many believers have sought shelter and received humanitarian aid at the national headquarters in Goma, DRC.

However, in order to continue meeting physical and spiritual needs at this property, investments need to be made for the church to remain in good standing with the local government. Thus far, two additional plots of land have been purchased. Now, a wall must be constructed around this property in order to both meet government codes and provide protection for the ministries taking place in and through it.

RWANDA

Seven churches in Rwanda have already been closed under the government’s evaluation that they failed to meet the required list of standards. The remaining six congregations now work tirelessly to remain open.

Additionally, plans for a national headquarters are well underway. In collaboration with Global Strategy Projects, the Church of God in Rwanda acquired a substantial piece of property in a prime location in 2023 upon which the new national headquarters will be constructed (as seen in the video). The first stage in this process will involve the construction of a rock wall around the property and the purchase of event tents, which will then be rented out to raise funding for the construction process. The objective of this building project is both to fulfill all necessary government requirements, while also fostering church growth and community development.

ZIMBABWE

Currently, all fifty-eight Church of God congregations in Zimbabwe meet under trees. Not a single one has a church building. While this reality has not stopped the church from vibrant growth and ministry throughout the nation, it does fail to meet the government’s standards and thus risks the loss of lawful standing in the nation.

Therefore, National Leader Rev. Guni has a dream of constructing the nation’s first Church of God building upon a piece of land that will serve as both the national headquarters and community center. Watch this video interview with Brother John Johnson to hear first-hand about Rev. Guni’s great vision for both the church and community.

We celebrate how, through this project partnership, a key piece of land has been purchased for the construction of this first church building in Zimbabwe. Fencing has secured the property, a borehole well has been drilled, and restroom facilities are in development. Now, funds are needed to purchase the remaining building materials and cover labor costs.
