In Her Own Words: Sarah Hunnicutt
By Sarah Hunnicutt, Missionary to Roatan, Honduras
Editor’s Note: Sarah Hunnicutt is among the six missionaries featured during Global Strategy’s 2018 impactX2 year-end campaign. A third-generation missionary, Sarah serves on the island of Roatan, teaching at a community Christian school and teaching ESL classes in the community.
Over the past four years, Roatan, Honduras, has become embedded in my heart. God’s grace in my story affords me the opportunity now to share His light on this island through education.
Honduras overflows with natural resources; greater still, it’s full of beautiful people with welcoming hearts, the gift of hospitality, and hope for the future. The Afro-Hondurans of Roatan are uniquely positioned to catalyze transformation in Honduras. They have a strong heritage dating back to the time of slavery, when they chose hope over defeat, that still guides them today. They deeply love their island and children. They want a better future.
Education is key to breaking the cycles of poverty, crime, teen pregnancy, and other ill. that are part of this country’s story. Education rooted in Christ has the potential to change lives forever. At this critical time when people must flee from their homes in hopes of finding work or safety at the risk of being arrested, deported, or killed in the process of escape, it’s imperative we begin laying a foundation in this current generation so they will have the option of choosing differently and creating a more peaceful Honduras.
Can you partner with me to bringing hope, light, and education to the people of Roatan, Honduras?
“This is the kind of fasting I want:
Let the oppressed go free,
and remove the chains that bind people.
Then your light will shine out from the darkness,
and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.”
—Isaiah 58:6b, 10b
